What do you do when plans for the class reunion you were anticipating, don’t materialize? If you’re lucky you have someone in your class who will step in to make sure the classmates have their get-together. Special thanks go to Candy Torrence Hollis and Nancy Hunt Boggan for planning our 45th Reunion. Candy stepped in to organize the reunion on short notice. Nancy Hunt Boggan continues to keep track of us and goes to extraordinary lengths to make sure that everyone knows about the reunions.
The French High School Class of 1965 held its 45th class reunion on April 23rd and 24th with 40+ class members in attendance. On Friday the 23rd, classmates met at the Lone Star Café (the old J and J’s, a past favorite eating place for many) for supper and visiting. . On display were a Memorial board prepared by Katheryn Husband Mevers and blow-ups of the 10th and 20th reunions (no magnifying glass required). People enjoyed the humorous cardboard cut-out that Gwen Asbury Speed brought for photo-ops. The following night, we continued the visit at Easy’s Restaurant on Calder where a reunion portrait was taken.
Saturday, a hospitality suite at the Marriott Courtyard, sponsored by Ben Whittington, provided a place for out-of-towners to visit with Beaumont classmates before and after the gathering at Easy’s. Refreshments for the suite were provided by Gwen Asbury Speed, Suzanne Coody Patrick, and Nancy Hunt Boggan. So many people asked about Gwen’s Frito Corn Dip, that the recipe is included in this write-up.
The person who traveled the farthest was Edward Krebs from Washington state. He received a Randy Wellborn jigsaw puzzle of Pigstand No. 41, donated by Suzanne Coody Patrick, as a remembrance of his trip to Beaumont. This was Edward’s first time to attend a class reunion, and we hope he’ll join us again for the 50th Reunion.
Future plans include a Class of ’65 Turns 65 picnic in Galveston in 2012 and a cruise, in 2012 or as an addition to the 50th Reunion.
