Living in Houston, TX temporarily. My home was in New Orleans until Katrina. I have lived Everywhere. I've traveled to India, Spain and South Africa teaching workshops and have had my work presented to the World Parliament of Religions twice. I'm an active member of the Gay/Lesbian Journalists Association and The Human Rights Campaign. I had a great life-partner for many years who is now deceased. Now it's just me and a great solid black German Shepherd puppy named Sam. In June I will be retiring to Mexico and will officially be an ex-pat. Thanks for the memories. Wish more of the group were listed. Overall....life has been good....ds

Comments: In Houston last spring for a conference, I just had to drive over to Beaumont. Walking around old FHS on a Saturday (maintenance guy let me in) was a really eerie experience - little has changed since we were there (the hallways, lockers, classrooms). Jogged down the football practice field; lots of fire ant mounds - don't remember them. It was my first time back since June 1964 when I got off the bus from Monterrey (foreign language group trip) and drove off to Mobile, AL. Last contact was a visit by Mike McCroskey and Burt Gray to Mobile in 1965. Really enjoyed seeing the website, comments by classmates, etc. Love and best wishes to all!

Comments: I spent 20 years as a research scientist at the Pharmacia Corp. in Kalamazoo MI. We were bought out by Pfizer last year and research jobs eliminated. I migrated to Jacksonville FL and was fortunate to find a position in research at the Mayo Clinic. Concidentally, I had been corresponding with Donald Golden, valeditorian of the class of 64 and one of my boyhood friends. He and his wife Kathy, after similar corporate takeovers decided to chuck the typical middle class and rather serve on the Caribbean Mercy ship. The Ship docked here in Jacksonville last fall, and I was able to have lunch with them on the ship. He informed me that another of our friends, Patrick White (Sullivan, died of a heart attack last fall. Patrick was saluditorian of the class of 64 and a wonderful human being.

Comments: I just spent some very enjoyable time going through this site.It all seems like a dream about another life time.Gus,I went to California.I have not been back to Beaumont since my mother's funeral, about 25 years ago.I saw Sam Wilson, Haywood and a few others at that time.My house was another one Gus will remember as being like home to everyone, mainly because of my mother. We all swam, partied and played sports,etc.there.I have been in touch with Mike McCroskey, and he has been to California. We talked a lot about old times, mainly because Jimmy Ruggles had just died.I keep saying I will make a reunion or go back just to see people, but life gets busy...I got a BS in Biology from SMU, then my MD from UT Southwestern, with postgraduate training at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, followed by Stanford University Hospital in Palo Alto, Ca.I have been practicing medicine for almost 27 years and have been married for the same amount of time. My daughter is 25,she gradu! ated from U.of Calf Berkley in economics and is returning there for graduate school(MBA/MPH).My son is 23 and graduating from SFSU.I have done some skiing and some sailing, and I still do a lot of boating. Please e-mail me.I would like to hear from everyone. We were all very close, and I miss the good friends I had at FHS.The sports were the best, the beach, and hunting and fishing. The Pigstand, fast cars, good music, and great girls.

Days we thought would never end, right? Mardi Gras, decorating and cleaning the mess up! Singing with Paula Tew, Sherry Free and Hattie Jo! Great crushes on guys who never saw me.I really hated PE! Flirting at baseball games, Janis Gray rubbing my arthritic legs so I could do the high kick! Those were the days guys!

Comments: Maribeth, thank you so much for what you are doing for all French Alumni. Thinking back about French High School recalls a special time in my life. Passing the school and seeing the tall pine trees and familiar buildings, is like being transported back in time to an era gone but not forgotten. Those were special times of Pig Stands, crew-cuts, bobby-socks, Elvis and Rock and Roll. But more than all that, it was our time and place in history that to most of us is recorded somewhere between wild, crazy, and fantastic. Listening to the "good ole" songs is pure nostalgic. Being able to visit, if just for a few hours, with friends that share these memories, only signifies that we were part of a very special generation and nothing, not even passing years, can take that away from us. That was our time and we made the most of it. The name has changed, the colors and mascot also, but nothing can erase those wonderful memories that French High School held for us. ! It was at the end of youth and the beginning of responsibility, but--- for just a few short years it was "Our Time" - that is my memory of French High School. Joan

Comments: I served on the planning committee and MC'd the banquet for this past summer's reunion for classes of '63, '64, & '65. It was wonderful. We reminisced about the arrival of the Beatles, the announcement of the death of President Kennedy, and the explosion in the chemistry lab of Archie Rogers-we dedicated the yearbook to him. We also remembered Tucker's Drive-In, a special "honk" when driving by a fellow Buff's house, and the Circle Drive-In theater. I recently retired after teaching and coaching for 30 years.

I served in Vietnam in the USAF and I am like so many others who feel blessed to have come home alive and to my family and my future. I have only seen a replica of the Vietnam Wall when it came to Beaumont several years ago, and it brought so many feelings back to me. Unfortunately, and I am sure not uncommonly, I saw names of guys I knew who were not as fortunate as I. Thank you again for all the many ways in which you honor and support the students from FHS. I'm just enjoying a typical lifestyle for your average 30 something year old. Except I "ache" a little more. What I remember about French is we had really good teachers! Meynig in math Halbouty and Wagstaff for English Smith in Spanish and Lanassa in Biology, etc. None of them griped about having to pass a 6th grade equivalency reading test. It was a great place and a great time, to be a kid. (Except for those 2-a-day's football practices in late August, with no water breaks, so we wouldn't get sick. It was hot!)

Comments: (updated july '09) Kath and I left Mercy Ships in 2006 and returned to Richmond, TX. We are cruising toward retirement (actually, Kath has retired) and loving life. We serve as small group leaders in our church and I do a weekly bible study in the prison in Sugar Land. I still enjoy flying and teaching people to fly. Looking forward to the reunion.
Initial comments ('99): I recall my time at French as a fun but confusing time. I wish I had demonstrated a little more of my latent wisdom in making more friends and giving more of myself to others. Good times in band and the various clubs provide precious memories. Updated ('04): A lot has transpired since I first signed up. My wife Kathy and I have been convinced by the Lord to dispose of most of our belongings and become lay missionaries. We did this in 2003, joining Mercy Ships (www.mercyships.org) where we are crew on the Caribbean Mercy. It is such a joy to be doing His work rather than our work. Note in my initial comments, I was regretting not being more giving of myself when at French. Well, God called me on that and gave me an opportunity to give. I would love to get in touch with FHS classmates and trade stories. The prospects of our attending a reunion are more tenuous since it will depend on where the ship is at the time of the reunion. Don't get ground down by the ordinary, take a risk and do something extraordinary. email: don.golden@alumni.rice.edu homepage: http://www.caribbean-mercy.org/~golden/

Year you left French: 1962 would have grad. 64 transfer to BHS
    Referred by: Another French Alumni
Comments: I have many fond memories of FHS as I had to transfer but still ran with the group...Ken Baber, Tommy Dickson, Harold Aulds, Robert Slovak and Joe Rosetta. I am now a United Methodist Pastor for the past ten years and prior spent 22 yrs. as a law enforcement officer and criminal investigator...both big switches for me..not as most would remember me. Would love to hear from folks in our era....
